7 Seas Month: Life on the Oregon Coast
The 7 Seas: The Oceans make up nearly 3/4 of our Earth. For centuries the 7 Seas
were a mystery. They have always
inspired lore and legend! From the great depths to shoreline and intertidal life, Oregon has some of the greatest shorelines in the world. Come with us and see them with new eyes.
This week we start out by joining our teen Kayak Building crew for the their second week at Rick Hazard's Cedargrove Permaculture Farm, Port Orford, OR where we learn and live homesteading on the Oregon coast. Rick's farm features baby goats, sustainable Port Orford Cedar harvest and rehabilitation, plus a two story cob building! From there we journey North staying in Sate Parks and some of the most exclusive camping areas (many places with no other soul around) on the Oregon Coast. We hit the best tidepool spots searching out Gumboot Chitons (Cryptochiton stelleri) and the incredible Sunflower Sea Star (Pycnopodia helianthoides, its sea star, not star fish:)
Early in the trip we journey in sea kayaks and explore the shoreline in a way few get a chance to. We charter a boat and look for whales, crab and dig for clams. All this plus haunted light houses, pirate treasure, and town time in fun coastal towns! Times is spent with real sailors learning to tell knots, telling scary sea stories and learning about maritime history and lore.
Sea vegetables is harvested and we learn to pickle them for treat that taste better than you would ever expect. We also explore the roots of indigenous technology and culture that made living on the Oregon Coast a paradise of family wealth. Finish the trip of a lifetime with a visit to the Oregon Coast Aquarium and the Hatfield Marine Science Center.
