Wilderness Survival Skills & Martial Arts June 22 -27, 2008
Wolverine & Chickadee Week: Masters of Survival
Wolverine & Chickadee: Such drastically different seeming animals, but so alike in their indomitable will in the wild! Chickadee's every cheerful demeanor will lead our way as we learn to imitate her joy. Wolverine's refusal to back down from a worthy challenge will stretch our limits, both physical and mental. Join us as we learn from the daily lives and lore of these amazing teachers of the stormy wilderness.
This week we learn Wilderness Survival Skills and Martial Arts in the Cascade wilderness. Survival becomes about the joy of the Chickadee and the strength of the Wolverine.
This is NOT man verse wild BUT instead people learning to connect to nature in the way people have for thousands of years. We practice primitive skills from making stone tools, fires without matches, weaving, tanning, and fabric arts such as leather sewing (make your own moccasins)!
We also focus on tracking and learn about primitive hunting methods*. Stealth arts are practiced everyday, along with martial arts that help us stay balanced, fit and safe. Our SHIFT: Martial Arts is Ju Jitsu, Boxing, Jeet Kun Do, Kali and Taoist standing exercises all combined to make a holistic system.
Many of our meals are wild harvested and we will eat WELL! We cover safe harvest of wild edible plants, preparing your own meat* and primitive outdoor cooking techniques, such as a steam pit!
Simple Survival Basics are also covered such as orienteering, staying found, emergency survival and basic first aid.
*sensibilities of vegetarians are respected, we have other equally valuable activities and options when a learning activity focuses on meat

Otter Players Ages 8-10 Otter Players explore a little more and a little further! They are often out and about the different greenspaces in the city with occasional BERRY picking trips to local farms.
